Russell Braun (born July 19, 1965 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a Canadian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

The son of the Canadian baritone Victor Braun and the German mezzo-soprano Eraine Schwing-Braun lived in Germany until he was 17, then studied piano with John Coveart at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto , and later singing with Patricia Kern at the University of Toronto .

In 1993 he made his successful debut as Papageno in The Magic Flute with the Canadian Opera Company. In the 1995/96 season he sang for the first time at the Met (in der Fledermaus ) and made his debut as Graf in Le nozze di Figaro in Monte Carlo and Berlin . In 1997 he successfully played the male title role in Robert Wilson's production of Pelléas et Mélisande , which was shown at both the Opéra National de Paris and the Salzburg Festival . His father - as Golaud - also took part in this production. In 2012 he sang the male lead in the opera L'Amour de loin .

Braun has a lyrical baritone of high flexibility and considerable vocal volume. He has also performed at the Lyric Opera of Chicago , the San Diego Opera and the San Francisco Opera , among others . His repertoire ranges from early works and baroque operas by Monteverdi , Rameau , Gluck , Purcell and Handel to Mozart , Rossini , Donizetti and the French subject to Strauss and Britten .

As a lieder singer, Braun can also refer to numerous successes, recordings and awards, including in duo evenings with the German tenor Michael Schade . He has sung with well-known orchestras under the direction of famous conductors such as Claudio Abbado , Silvain Cambreling , Sir Simon Rattle and Michael Tilson Thomas .
