The Philharmonia Choir Vienna was founded in 2002. This happened on the initiative of Gerard Mortier , the former artistic director of the Salzburg Festival . The ensemble initially called itself, depending on the project, the Ruhr Triennale Choir or the Baden-Baden Festival Choir . Since 2006 the choir has appeared as an independent association under the name Philharmonia Chor Wien . Walter Zeh is the founder and choirmaster .
Projects and tasks
The choir made guest appearances - under conductors such as Claudio Abbado , Marc Minkowski , Kent Nagano and others - in opera productions of the Bremen Music Festival ( L'Arlésienne ), in Reggio Emilia and Ferrara ( Die Zauberflöte ), in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden ( Parsifal , Die Zauberflöte and Tannhäuser ) as well as at the RuhrTriennale ( Don Giovanni , Die Zauberflöte ). At the RuhrTriennale in 2007, the choir demonstrated its versatility by participating in Wilhelm Genazino's play Courasche or Gott lass nach in the Duisburg blower hall , as well as in Falk Richter's Unter Eis in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum .
In 2010 the choir made its debut at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival and at the Ravenna Festival and performed Mozart's La Betulia liberata staged and Jommelli's La Betulia liberata in concert under the direction of Riccardo Muti . In 2011 - again in Salzburg and Ravenna - Mercadante's opera I due Figaro followed . This production was also seen and heard in 2012 at the Teatro Real in Madrid and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. On the award of honorary membership to Gerard Mortier , the ensemble writes: "We want to continue to fulfill the great trust that Gerard Mortier has placed in us in the future, to continue on our path in his sense and will always keep an honorable memory of him." 2013 and 2014 The choir took over central opera productions of the Salzburg Festival - Falstaff and Don Giovanni - both in the house for Mozart .
In addition to the opera, the ensemble also works as a concert choir . On New Year's Eve and New Year 2006/2007 the choir sang Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and excerpts from Porgy and Bess with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra under Stephen Sloane . At the Salzburg Whitsun Festival 2011 was in the Summer Riding School Cherubini's Requiem at the opening of Riccardo Muti on the program, Grafenegg Music Festival also in 2011 Beethoven's Ninth with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria under Andrés Orozco-Estrada . The choir sang another opening concert in the Monreale Cathedral at the 54th Editione Festival di Musical Sacra under Reinhard Seehafer with Haydn's Creation in November 2011.
