Kathryn Lewek

Kathryn Lewek (born October 25, 1983 ) is an American coloratura soprano .

Kathryn Lewek studied singing at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (New York) .

Her repertoire includes roles such as the Queen of the Night ( Die Zauberflöte ), "Gilda" ( Rigoletto ), "Teresa" ( Benvenuto Cellini ), "Poppea" Agrippina and "Rosina" ( Il barbiere di Siviglia ) as well as the title roles in Maria Stuarda and Lucia di Lammermoor .

She sang at the Metropolitan Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Vienna State Opera , the Teatro Real in Madrid, the English National Opera , the Lyric Opera of Chicago as well as at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Bregenz Festival . In 2019 she sang “Eurydice” in Orphée aux enfers at the Salzburg Festival .

A few weeks after Kathryn Lewek gave birth to her child by caesarean section, Kathryn Lewek was exposed to a body shaming attack by several opera critics in August 2019 as part of her role as Eurydice at the Salzburg Festival . She countered the public criticism of her body courageously and openly. The American soprano became the point of contact for other singers who were victims of bodyshaming.

Lewek was a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and also gives concerts with numerous international orchestras.
