Andreas Ammer (born March 23, 1960 in Munich ) is a German writer , television producer and radio play maker .

Life

Andreas Ammer was born to Albert Ammer (1916–1991) and Jutta-Regina Ammer , née Lau (1931–2019). Albert Ammer was a film cameraman , Jutta-Regina Ammer a photographer . Andreas Ammer studied German, philosophy and history of natural sciences at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he did his doctorate on the subject of horror graphics: The writing of fear and the horrors of writing as the micromechanics of meaning in the classical period of German literature . First working as a lecturer at the University of Munich, he then became a freelance writer, director and television journalist. Since 2003 he has been responsible for the realization and design of the ARD literature show hot off the press .

Ammer has become known on the one hand as a documentary filmmaker and cultural journalist, but above all through his radio play and theater productions. As a designer of TV programs, he began his career as an employee of Alexander Kluge in the legendary "Hour of the Filmmakers". His collaborations with musicians are famous. He has worked with FM Einheit from Einstürzende Neubauten and Ulrike Haage from Rainbirds , among others . His first radio play "Orbis Auditus" was voted "Radio Play of the Year" in 1990. In 1993, Andreas Ammer directed the radio play Radio Inferno for Bayerischer Rundfunk based on Dante's Divine Comedy . At that time, he was one of a number of authors and directors who fundamentally changed the radio play by incorporating pop elements and live performances. (“Apocalypse live”, “Frost”, “Marx Engels Works”). Further stage works followed: At the Bonn Opera, Ammer realized the opera Alzheimer 2000 / Toter Trakt about Ulrike Meinhof and the RAF with FM Einheit . For WDR , Andreas Ammer and Console (Martin Gretschmann) produced the documentary / musical radio play Spaceman '85 in which the sound material of a space flight from 1985 was used. In these recordings, the German science astronaut Reinhard Furrer describes his personal thoughts before and during his stay in space. Most of these radio plays were not only broadcast on the radio, but mostly also performed live on tours and distributed as CDs. The production "Apocalypse live" was invited to the 1995 Salzburg Festival.

Between 2003 and 2006 Ammer realized productions for the Bavarian State Opera together with cellist Sebastian Hess such as Unser Oskar (about Oskar Maria Graf ), Heimspiel (a language opera for Karl Valentin and a football stadium) and Dido & Aeneas - the baroque opera stripped of its lovers ( after Henry Purcell ). In 2009 he realized the mammoth project "13", a radio play in 13 episodes of 13 minutes each, with Console based on a manuscript by crime novelist Heinrich Steinfest .

For Apocalypse Live , Ammer was awarded the renowned war blind radio play award in 1995. In 2001 he received it again for Crashing Airplanes, which is based on original recordings of black boxes from crashing planes. This makes him the only author to have received this award twice. As in this piece, he does not primarily work with his own texts, but with found, historical original sounds. This is also the case in the "Tonträgeroper" " German Warriors ", a trilogy that was composed from sounds from the 1st and 2nd World War, as well as from the German RAF terrorism and only 20 years after the CD was released for the first time in 2017 in the House of Cultures the Welt Berlin was performed live. The work " You speak with the Stasi " (with FM unit), which consists of original tapes and interrogation recordings from the GDR Stasi authorities, also dates from the same year .

Ammer is the only director who has received the highest awards on radio and television (German TV Prize 2011 as "Special Achievement Information") at the same time.

In 2017 he realized with Andreas Gerth and Martin Gretschmann (alias Acid Pauli) the internet project "Infinite Game", which became known as the "biggest radio play in the world". It consists of an almost 80-hour reading of the novel "Unendlicher Spass" by the American author David Foster Wallace, in which each of the almost 1,400 pages of the novel was read in by a different speaker via the Internet, the readings then by an analog computer that "Golden Machine", were set to music. The final result, which was completed after a year, can still be accessed via the network at any time.

Also in 2017, Andreas Ammer, together with FM Einheit, reconstructed Arsenij Avraamov's experimental noise opera "Symphony of the Sirens" from 1923 at the Philharmonie in Brno with over 200 participants in a live performance .

Ammer lives in Berg (Starnberger See) , where he is co-founder of a free voter association "QUH (across - independent - connected to home)".
