The Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Perm State Opera and Ballet Theater is the opera house of the Russian city ​​of Perm .

history

The theater is one of the oldest in the country, its ballet company is one of the most famous in Russia. It was inaugurated on November 24, 1870 with Michail Glinka's A Life for the Tsar .

The current building (which was later changed architecturally) was built between 1874 and 1879 and inaugurated in the winter of 1879/1880. From 1896 it was under the patronage of the city parliament, which subsidized the stage in the future. Giuseppe Verdi's Aida was the first production with financial support from the city. The first work after the Russian Civil War was performed on August 20, 1921. This season, among others, The Demon , Faust , Eugene Onegin , Boris Godunow , Rigoletto and the Il barbiere di Siviglia were represented.

By the end of this decade, it was one of the most important opera centers in Russia. During the German-Soviet War it was the venue for the ensemble of the Kirov Theater in Leningrad .

In 1965 it was renamed in honor of Peter Tchaikovsky and elevated to an academy in 1969. Since then, the theater has often been referred to as the Tchaikovsky House. The repertoire today includes ten operas and three ballets by the composer.

In 1984 the theater was awarded for its performance of the work of Sergei Prokofiev's War and Peace . The opera house also received the golden mask several times .

The artistic director of the Perm State Opera and Ballet Theater has been Teodor Currentzis since 2011 .
