Fabio Biondi

Fabio Biondi (born March 15, 1961 in Palermo ) is an Italian violinist , conductor and founder of the Europa Galante ensemble .

Life

At the age of 12, Biondi began his career with a concert with the RAI Symphony Orchestra . At the age of 16 he performed Johann Sebastian Bach's violin concertos in the Wiener Musikverein . Early on he devoted himself to historical performance practice and played the baroque violin with the ensembles La Capella Reial de Catalunya under Jordi Savall , Musica Antiqua Wien, the Clemencic Consort , the Seminario Musicale, the La Chapelle Royale under Philippe Herreweghe and the Les Musiciens du Louvre Marc Minkowski .

In 1990 Biondi founded the Ensemble Europa Galante , with which he made numerous recordings and which is one of the leading European baroque ensembles. His extensive discography has appeared on the Warner Classics, Virgin and Glossa labels and has brought Biondi numerous awards, including the Diapason d'Or de l'Année and the Choc de Musique . His recording of the Paganini Sonatas for Violin and Guitar was recognized as Editor's Choice by Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine's Chamber Choice.

From 2005 to 2016, Biondi was artistic director for baroque music with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted the Orchester Philharmonique de France, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra , the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and others. From 2015 to 2018 he was musical director at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, under his direction productions by Donizetti, Rossini, Haydn and most recently Verdi's Il Corsaro were performed.

Biondi plays a violin from 1686 attributed to Andrea Guarneri , as well as another by Gennaro Gagliano (1766), made available to him by the Salvatore Cicero Foundation in Palermo.
