Christoph Hillmann (* 1964 ) is a German jazz drummer and percussionist .

Live and act

Hillmann studied at the Arnhem Conservatory with Joop van Erven and René Creemers . Since 1993 he has lived in Cologne as a drummer and percussionist. In addition to the classic drums, everyday objects are also used as instruments. He uses live electronics and plays instruments such as the Persian tombak , the Indian dholak , frame drums, and the occasional kalimba and darbuka .

He works in numerous groups and projects: With André Nendza in the groups A-Tronic (with Oliver Leicht and Stephan Meinberg ), The Invention of Rooms (with Claudius Valk and Hendrik Soll ) and in the trio Lemke- Nendza-Hillmann , with Angelika Niescier in the groups Sublim (with Hans Lüdemann and Sebastian Räther ) and the tap dance project Summit Talks , with Norbert Steins Patamasters and the Frank Speer Acoustic Quartet (with Nils Wogram and Sebastian Räther). He has also worked as a musician and composer in numerous dance projects since the early 1990s and recorded music for films and radio plays. The International Building Exhibition Lausitz commissioned him with a musical district project as part of "Paradies 2", which in 2011 received the BKM Prize for Cultural Education .

He has been teaching drums as a major since 2008 at the Osnabrück University of Music and gives seminars on a wide variety of rhythmic specialties. Since 2012 he has been on the board of the Union of German Jazz Musicians .

Prizes and awards

As a drummer, Hillmann received advancement awards at the Leipzig Jazz Days , Eurojazz Brussels, the Münster Jazz Festival and the Leverkusener Jazz Days . The productions Sublim III and Rooms Restored each received the ECHO Jazz . The Tria Lingvo (Lemke - Nendza - Hillmann) shared the New German Jazz Prize in 2014 with the duo Claudius Valk / Sebastian Sternal .
