Stephan-Max Wirth (born March 7, 1968 in Tettnang ) is a German jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone ), composer and producer .

Wirth received his first lesson from Leszek Zadlo in Munich. After completing his studies at the Dutch University of the Arts in Arnhem with Jörg Kaufmann , he came to Cologne in 1995. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1999. With his own Stephan-Max Wirth Ensemble , which he founded in 1992 , he undertook international tours that brought him a. a. led to Portugal, Poland and Greece.

Wirth played a. a. with Jens Winther , Peter Herbolzheimer , Julia Hülsmann , Hazel Leach , Tino Derado , Kevin Burrell, Thomasz Kupiez, Henning Wolter , André Nendza , Eric Schaefer , Christoph Hillmann , Bill Ramsey and Ack van Rooyen . In 1993 he founded his own record label BOS.REC.

In 1996, after several days at the Athens club Half Note, a live album was created that documents his guest performances in Greece. The recording Mythos (1997) presents chansons that have been modally reharmonized and combined with German singing.

Cologne arranger Thomas Forkert arranged selected compositions from the 2001 CD fish & monkey for big band ; the title track fish and monkey is in the repertoire of numerous big bands. In 2004 Stephan-Max Wirth released the album Illumination . It was overtone singing with modern jazz -Harmonik and Sitar linked-lines, creating an unusual sound structure. In 2004 he received the Berlin Senate's Studio Award for this album.

Stephan-Max Wirth dealt repeatedly with cross-genre projects. In 2006 the stage play DADA Republic! for jazz ensemble, 3 dancers and live video projection. Together with the Leipzig ballet director Mario Schröder , a form was developed to continue jazz on the level of ballet and film. The idea was based on a previously unrealized script by the Flemish Dadaist Paul van Ostaijen . The project premiered at the JazzFest Berlin '06 . Further performances took place at the Markgrafentheater in Erlangen , at the North German Dance Meeting in Greifswald, in the Landeskulturzentrum Salzau and at the Kiel Theater Festival. The DVD / CD DADA Republic! Live at JazzFest Berlin was nominated for the German Record Critics' best list . The film premiere took place in 2009 at the Bauhaus Dessau .

Influenced by the death of Alice Coltrane , who died in 2007, the album multiple pulse - a tribute to Alice Coltrane was created in 2009 . This CD was nominated for the JAZZ-ECHO German Music Prize 2010 in the Ensemble of the Year category.
