Jens Winther (born October 29, 1960 in Næstved ; † February 24, 2011 in Geneva ) was a Danish trumpeter and flugelhorn player of modern jazz and composer .

Life

Winther came to Copenhagen in 1978 , first played in local bands and began his international career as solo trumpeter with the Danish Radio Orchestra (from 1982 to 1989) and in Ernie Wilkins ' Almost Big Band in the mid-1980s . In 1989 Winther moved to New York City to work for two years in the Jazz Composer's Workshop under the direction of Bob Brookmeyer . He also played in the WDR Big Band Köln ( The Escape 1994), in the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band ( Merryteria , 1998), in the Big Band of Carla Bley ( Fleur Carnivore , 1988) and with Palle Mikkelborg and Miles Davis ( Aura , 1985).

Winther wrote numerous compositions for big bands, but also for symphony orchestras and choirs. His Concerto for Trumpeter and Orchestra premiered in 1994 at the Riga Music Festival. In 1999 he performed his second trumpet concerto, The Eagle , with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra , followed by Pluto and Beyond , which he wrote for the Metropole Orchestra .

In 1987 Winther received the Ben Webster Prize . Since the late 1980s he has also worked with his own formations and recorded a number of albums for the Storyville and Stunt Records label , including a. 1988 Looking Through with Tomas Franck , Thomas Clausen , Jesper Lundgaard and Alex Riel , Scorpio Dance (1991) with Tomas Franck and Al Foster ; 1996 the big band album The Four Elements with members of the International Association of Schools of Jazz who performed Winthers four-part work at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. In 2005 the album Concord was created with his European Quintet with Tomas Franck, Antonio Faraò , Palle Danielsson and Dejan Terzic . In his last years he also worked with his fusion project JW-Electrazz and in a trio with Tino Derado (piano) and Pepe Berns (bass), with whom he recorded the album Love Songs in 2009 . He also went on tour with Klaus Lenz in 2010 .

Winther died of a stroke . His children are the singer Malene Mortensen and the pianist Carl Winther .
