Carl Winther (born October 8, 1984 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish jazz musician ( piano , composition ). He is considered one of the best pianists in Denmark.

Life

Winther comes from a family of musicians: his father was the jazz musician Jens Winther , his mother the drummer Karen Mortensen ; the singer Malene Mortensen is his older sister. He began piano lessons in 1991 and received classical and jazz training. Between 2006 and 2011 he studied at the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen. His trio initially included the Swedish bassist Joel Illerhag, whom he met during his studies; the band's drummer, Anders Mogensen , experienced Winther and Illehag as external auditors at conservatory concerts. The trio toured Europe and the US in 2010 and recorded the CD Red Alert . The trio expanded to include Jerry Bergonzi to form a quartet, who recorded their first album Sonic Shapes after a Scandinavian tour in 2011 . The trio album Deconstructing Mr. X followed in 2016 with a different line-up .

He also performed with his father, with Billy Hart , Bill Evans , Daniel Humair , Adam Nussbaum , James Genus , Till Brönner , Marcus Strickland , Dick Hafer , Dejan Terzic , Eliel Lazo, Moussa Diallo , Mads Vinding , Hugo Rasmussen , Mikkel Nords, Al Campos, Tomas Franck , Doug Raney , Frederik Kronkvist and Afonso Corea.

Prizes and awards

Winter won the Linkjøbing jazz competition in 2006 with the band Skurup Hot 5 and their own compositions. In 2011 he received two prizes for his compositions, at the Getxo jazz competition and first prize at the Danish DPA jazz composition Konkretence . In 2013 he won the Jazz nad Odrą competition with the quartet of Tomasz Licak and Radek Wośko.
