Jesper Lundgaard

Jesper Lundgaard (* 12. June 1954 in Hillerød ) is a Danish bassist of the Modern Jazz .

Lundgaard studied in Aarhus and played in the local jazz club with guest American musicians such as Roy Eldridge , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Harry Sweets Edison and Jimmy Raney . In 1978 he became a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band and toured Europe with them. In 1979 he moved to Copenhagen and worked at the Jazzhus Montmartre . In 1992 he was part of Svend Asmussen's group . In 1999 he formed the Repertoire Quartet with Bob Rockwell and recorded six albums; In 2001 he formed the Jesper Lundgaard Trio , with whom he recorded the albums “Celluloid”, “Sculping” and “Plays Cornelis”. In 2013 the album "Love and Peace: The Music of Horace Parlan" followed. He celebrated his 60th birthday in a concert with Enrico Pieranunzi and Alex Riel ( 60 Out of Shape ).

He was also involved in over 200 recordings as a sideman, in the 1980s with Benny Carter and Teddy Wilson at their sessions in Scandinavia, Chet Baker , Paul Bley , Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Horace Parlan , Frank Foster , Warne Marsh , Kirk Lightsey (“ Isotope ”, 1983), Bernt Rosengren , Michal Urbaniak , Ernie Wilkins and Jimmy Raney , on whose 1983 album“ The Master ”he participated. In the 1990s he was also involved in recordings of Tommy Flanagan ("Let's" on Enja ), Lee Konitz , Arne Domnérus , Jesper Thilo and Alex Riel , finally in 2001 by Thomas Clausen . Lundgaard also works as a sound engineer, has his own recording studio and produces amplifiers for bass and guitar.

Lundgaard received the Ben Webster Prize in 1982 and the JASA Prize in 1992.
