The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1998 was the 96th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 12, 1998.

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 266.5 kilometers long. 192 drivers started, 49 of whom were able to place; 17 other drivers reached the finish outside of the time limit. The winner Franco Ballerini completed the race with an average speed of 38.27  km / h .

Eight riders left the peloton 65 kilometers from the finish line , another 15 kilometers later Franco Ballerini attacked and set off on his own. He completed a solo trip to the cycling track , where he arrived with a lead of more than four minutes and won for the second time since 1995 .

It was the second time since 1996 that the Mapei team was able to take the first three places.
