Henri Cornet (ca.1905)

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1906 was the eleventh edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 15, 1906.

The race went from Chatou over 270 kilometers. 71 cyclists were registered, of which 14 were able to place; it is not known how many of those registered actually started. The winner Henri Cornet , who had finished third the year before, completed the race at an average speed of 27.123 kilometers per hour . Before the start there was a cold, light rain, but a little later the sun came out.

Henri Cornet and Marcel Cadolle reached the Vélodrome roubaisien at the same time, and Cornet won the race in the sprint to the finish. Third was René Pottier , who also won the Tour de France in the same year .

The route was changed for this event. The reason for this was the Courrières mining disaster a few weeks earlier, in which over 1,000 people were killed. The population was upset and serious allegations were made against the mine operators. The organizers of the race feared that the anger of the citizens could turn against the drivers: "You might throw stones at their heads," said Henri Desgrange . So it was decided to branch off behind Douai and bypass Courrières , which made the route a little longer.
