Johan Museeuw (2006)

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 2002 was the 100th staging of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 14th, 2002.

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers from Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 254.5 kilometers long, 49.1 kilometers of which led over pavé sectors . 190 drivers started, 57 of whom were able to place; 16 drivers reached the finish outside of the time limit. The winner Johan Museeuw completed the race with an average speed of 39.235  km / h .

The weather was " flahute ": it was wet and windy, the streets slippery and full of mud. After four pavé sectors, a leading group of twelve drivers formed, including Tom Boonen , who meanwhile had a lead of around four minutes. After the Trouée d'Arenberg , Museeuw, George Hincapie and Steffen Wesemann broke away from the peloton and set out to chase the leaders, whose lead was constantly melting. They overtook the leading group 44 kilometers from the finish. Shortly afterwards Museeuw set the pace and drove off, Boonen and Hincapie followed him. Hincapie fell into a ditch, Wesemann overtook him and caught up with Boonen. With 10 kilometers to go, Museeuw was two and a half minutes ahead. He is the first to reach the cycle track in Roubaix after a solo journey of 40 kilometers, covered in mud from top to bottom. Behind him, Boonen started the sprint, but was overtaken by Wesemann, who took second place.

It was Museeuw's third win at Paris – Roubaix after 1996 and 2000 .
