The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1897 was the second edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 18, 1897.
The race went over 280 kilometers. 32 professional cyclists and 26 amateurs were at the start. The winner Maurice Garin , who won the first Tour de France in 1903 , completed the race at an average speed of 28.124 kilometers per hour .
At the start in Paris the streets were wet, but a little later the sun came out. The two leading drivers, the French Garin and the Dutch Mathieu Cordang drove into the Velodrome roubaisien together , but Cordang fell. He got back on his bike and within the six laps that still had to be completed on the velodrome , he came within two meters of Garin, who finally won the race.
