Bernard Hinault after winning the 1978 Tour de France

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1981 was the 79th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 12th, 1981.

The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 263 kilometers long. 174 drivers started, of which 57 were able to place. The winner Bernard Hinault completed the race at an average speed of 40.87 km / h .

The cobblestones were wet, slippery, and full of mud. Bernard Hinault, road world champion last year, dominated the race. A group of six riders reached the cycle race track in Roubaix together when Hinault started the sprint with a large gear ratio. Demeyer and De Vlaeminck pushed him, but Hinault was unbeatable that day.

Hinault, who loathed cobblestones, is quoted as saying: “Paris – Roubaix est une connerie.” (“Paris – Roubaix is shit.”) In 2005, sector 19 of Haveluy was named after Wallers after him.
