The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1931 was the 32nd edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 5th, 1931.
The race went from Argenteuil over 256 kilometers. 102 racing drivers started, of which 51 were able to place. The winner Gaston Rebry completed the race with an average speed of 36.44 km / h . He was much faster than the winners in previous years, which was due to technical innovations on the bikes, which was mainly due to the previously spreading use of gears from manufacturers such as Cyclo, Huret or Simplex in cycling were used almost exclusively by cycle tourists.
During the race it was very cold rain with strong winds and the peloton was divided into many small groups. Rebry, nicknamed Bulldog , wasn't a good sprinter, so he kept the pace up until he was in the lead. Only Émile Joly could keep up, but was stopped by a flat tire shortly before the finish on Avenue les Villas in Roubaix . At this event, the rivalry between the Belgians and the French that had been cultivated for decades in this race had its climax, as nine Belgians were able to place in the top ten. For the first time, a larger German delegation from an Opel team was there: Hermann Buse was 11th, Karl Koch 15th and Ludwig Geyer 16th.
