The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1983 was the 81st edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 10, 1983.
The race led from Compiègne , around 80 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 274 kilometers long. 193 riders started, 32 of whom were able to place. The winner Hennie Kuiper completed the race with an average speed of 40.308 km / h .
The pace was high right from the start and a leading group of 20 drivers quickly emerged. Halfway through the race the peloton had shrunk a lot and last year's winner Jan Raas had to retire.
Hennie Kuiper crashed twice but managed to pull out of a small group of leading riders with 10 miles to go. At first nobody followed him. While Kuiper wasn't a good sprinter, his solo rides were feared. Although the rear wheel of his bicycle broke in a groove, he managed to keep his pursuers at bay. He won the race on his eleventh participation.
