Roger De Vlaeminck (1978)

The one-day race Paris – Roubaix 1972 was the 70th edition of the cycling classic and took place on Sunday, April 16, 1972.

The race led from Chantilly , around 50 kilometers north of Paris , to Roubaix , where it ended in the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux . The entire route was 272.5 kilometers long. 160 drivers started, 49 of whom were able to place. The winner Roger De Vlaeminck completed the race with an average speed of 36.187 km / h .

During the race, heavy, cold rain fell and the wind blew from the front: "perfect flahute weather". With 23 kilometers to go, Roger De Vlaeminck broke away from a small breakaway group in order to pursue Willy Van Malderghem , who was leading the way alone. De Vlaeminck reached Van Malderghem and passed him. He won by almost two minutes. Ole Ritter landed in ninth place , the first Dane in the top ten at Paris – Roubaix after Charles Meyer , who had taken second place in 1896 .
