Franco Ballerini (born December 11, 1964 in Florence , † February 7, 2010 in Pistoia ) was an Italian racing cyclist and from 2001 until his accidental death in 2010, team boss of the Italian national team at road cycling world championships .
Career
Ballerini began his professional career in 1986 with the Magniflex cycling team and developed into a specialist in classic one-day races . He took part 13 times in Paris-Roubaix, one of the monuments of cycling and won the race in 1995 and 1998. He finished his active career on April 15, 2001 in this competition as 32nd.
In 1996 Ballerini won the Grand Prix de Wallonie , but tested positive for ephedrine and banned for 20 days for doping.
As Commissario Tecnico of the Italian national team, he led Mario Cipollini in 2002 , Paolo Bettini in 2006 and 2007 and Alessandro Ballan to the world title in 2008 . Paolo Bettini also became Olympic champion in 2004 under Ballerini's direction .
On February 7, 2010 Ballerini died of accidental injuries sustained as a co-driver at an amateur rally near Larciano .
