Karl Gottfried Siebelis (born October 10, 1769 in Naumburg , † August 7, 1843 in Budissin , today Bautzen ) was a German classical philologist and educator.

Life

Siebelis was raised by his grandparents after the early death of his parents and attended the Ratsgymnasium zu Naumburg, where he received Latin lessons from Friedrich Wilhelm Döring . After graduating, he moved to the University of Leipzig , where he studied theology and philosophy. Gottfried Hermann was one of his fellow students . The classical scholar Christian Daniel Beck accepted both into the Societas Philologica Lipsiensis . After the master’s examination, Siebelis worked as a tutor. In 1798 he was appointed vice rector at the Stiftsgymnasium Zeitz , in 1804 he went to the Bautzen Ratsgymnasium as rector , where Karl Friedrich Ameis , Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer and Ernst Theodor Stöckhardt were among his students. He continued the course of his predecessor Ludwig Gedike and made the grammar school one of the leading German educational institutions. In 1841 he retired.

Siebelis was a sponsor of the Sorbs in Bautzen and a member of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences . Through his teaching activities and his numerous writings, including a "critical-exegetical" edition of Pausanias in 5 volumes from 1822 to 1828, he acquired the reputation of an internationally respected scholar during his lifetime. His contribution to the further development of the school programs of the time in the sense of classical humanism should be emphasized . He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bautzen since 1816 .

His son Johannes Siebelis was also a philologist.
