Christian Daniel Beck (born January 22, 1757 in Leipzig ; † December 13, 1832 ibid) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Beck learned at the Leipzig Thomas School and studied at the University of Leipzig . Here he received his master's degree in 1778, completed his habilitation in 1779 and in 1782 was initially an extraordinary, but from 1785 a full professor of Greek and Latin literature. From 1819 to 1825 he exchanged his chair for history. He was rector of the university twelve times.

In 1785 he founded the Philological Society in Leipzig. From 1790 Beck was director of the Leipzig University Library . From 1803 to 1818 Beck was editor of the Leipziger Litteratur-Zeitung . From 1807 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and from 1825 honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Beck had a son, Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Beck , who was a lawyer.
