Friedrich Wolfgang Reiz (also: Reitz , born September 2, 1733 in Windsheim ; † February 2, 1790 in Leipzig ) was a German philologist , ancient scholar and professor of poetry and eloquence at the University of Leipzig .

Life

Friedrich Wolfgang Rei (t) z came from a Franconian clergy. His father Wolfgang Ludwig Reitz was the parish priest of Windsheim. After attending his home high school, he moved to the University of Leipzig in 1753 to study classical philology with Johann Friedrich Christ and Johann August Ernesti . In 1757 he passed the master’s examination and worked for several years as a court master for various families and as a proofreader at the Breitkopf publishing house . Reiz did not habilitate until 1766 with the work De temporibus et modis verbi graeci et latini and was appointed a colleague, in 1772 an extraordinary professor of philosophy. After More 's transfer to the Faculty of Theology, Reiz was promoted to full professor of Greek and Latin as his successor in 1782. Soon after, after the death of the professor of poetry and eloquence Christian August Clodius , Reiz was appointed his successor (1785). In addition to his teaching activities, Reiz was a university librarian for a long time and traveled to Vienna in 1783 to organize the antiques cabinet there.

Stimulus' greatest achievement was the establishment of the grammatical-critical direction of philology by his numerous students, the most important of whom was Gottfried Hermann . Reiz put his main focus on academic teaching, which is why he published very few writings. To this end, he suggested many of his students' projects, such as Gottfried Hermann's study of Greek and Roman metrics.
