Life

Christian August was the son of Christian Clodius (1694–1775) and Eleonora Sophia (née Scheureck, 1713–1758). He had received his first education from his father and expanded it at the Ratsgymnasium in Cottbus . In 1756 he began studying philosophy at the University of Leipzig . After the death of his mother, he returned to Cottbus in 1758, where he made the acquaintance of Ewald Christian von Kleist . This motivated him to deal more with German literary studies. Therefore, he went back to Leipzig, where he, encouraged by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, acquired the academic degree of master's degree in philosophical sciences in 1759 and then became a private lecturer.
