The Philipp-Melanchthon-Gymnasium Bautzen (short name: PMG Bautzen ) in Bautzen is a grammar school . It is named after the philologist, philosopher, humanist , theologian, textbook author and neo-Latin poet Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560).

history

The Philipp-Melanchthon-Gymnasium Bautzen as such emerged directly from the evangelical council school ( Latin school ) that was established in the course of the Reformation and was founded in 1527. After 1936 it became a "State High School for Boys " due to the National Socialist conformity . In 1945, initially a commercial school , it was converted into a vocational school in the GDR's educational system from 1949 and was a polytechnic high school from 1960 .

Since 1992 the building has housed a grammar school again. In 1998 the grammar school was given the name "Philipp Melanchthon". The motto is doctrinae in Latin . Sapientiae. Pietati. ( The instruction. The wisdom. The sense of duty. ) The school operation is divided into a day and from 1995 an evening grammar school ( Abitur in the second educational path with currently around 60 students).

The grammar school has had a school partnership and an exchange program with the grammar school in Hämeenlinna (Finland) since 2007 .

Friends of the grammar school

Since February 10, 1993, the school has been supported by a sponsoring association, which is committed to providing non-material, material and personal support for the student body and everyday school life. Over the years, the association has managed to allocate funds totaling around 220,000 euros to the grammar school (as of December 31, 2018). Since September 6, 2014, the club's management has been the responsibility of graduate Patrick Höhne. The association currently has around 200 members.
