Gregor Mättig, also: Gregorius Mättig, (born September 25, 1585 in Budissin ; † March 30, 1650 ibid) was a German physician and one of the most important patrons of the city of Budissin.

Mättig's mother Margarethe (née Peucker, 1556–1598) was the youngest sister of Caspar Peucer , who was a son-in-law of Philipp Melanchthon .

Life

The councilor of the city was also a physician and philosopher , although he did not become well known in these two areas to this day. Mättig spent most of his life in Budissin; During the Thirty Years' War he lived temporarily on the Meschwitz manor . He died childless.

Even during his lifetime, the wealthy Mättig made a name for himself with generous donations for his hometown, for example for the interior of St. Petri Cathedral after it was severely damaged in the Thirty Years' War. A large number of foundations , which were established on his initiative for the good of the city, still form the basis of important municipal collections today. Was he in the course of his life gathered extremely valuable and extensive natural science, art historical and literary collection after his death "the most sustainable of importance rate and the whole city Budissin left to ever währendem memory". This laid the foundation for the Bautzen City Library , the oldest and still largest library in Lusatia . In the years that followed, the library not only became a center for Budissiner, but also for the entire Lusatian intellectual life. From what was once Mättig's possession, the city still owns 211 valuable volumes.

aftermath

In addition to the many collections and donated art objects, a street and the Dr. Gregor Mättig Primary School, which was only renamed in 1999, are a reminder of the city's “benefactor”. An epitaph on the south side of St. Petri Cathedral marks Mättig's final resting place. There is a memorial plaque on the house where he died.

Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation

The Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation, which existed from 1650 to 1949, made contributions to the promotion of the next generation of education and culture in Bautzen. On September 25, 2007, the Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation was re-established in Bautzen.
