Sylvère Maes
Sylvère Maes (born August 27, 1909 in Gistel , † December 5, 1966 in Oostende ) was a Belgian cyclist who won the Tour de France twice ( 1936 and 1939 ). There is no relationship to Romain Maes , the 1935 Belgian Tour de France winner .
Life
He was part of the outstanding Belgian national team of the 1930s. With two triumphs in the Tour de France (1936 and 1939) he himself contributed to this glorious phase. The 1933 victory in the classic Paris – Roubaix is another highlight of his career.

- Tour 1937 : abandonment (1 stage win)
- Tour 1938 : 14th place
- Tour 1939 : Winner (3 stage wins), winner of the mountain classification
Maes won the last Tour de France before World War II . After the war he reached a fifth place in the Giro d'Italia in 1947 (at the age of 37). In 1948 he ended his cycling career.
