Pierre Brambilla

Pierre Brambilla (born February 13, 1919 in Villarbeney , Switzerland ; † February 13, 1984 in Grenoble ) was an Italian-French cyclist .

Pierre Brambilla was born in Switzerland as an Italian and took French citizenship in 1949. He was a professional cyclist from 1939 to 1952.

In 1939 Brambilla won the Lyon-Grenoble-Lyon race together with Giuseppe Martino . At the Vuelta a España in 1942 , he finished second in the mountain classification, in the same year the mountain classification at the Circuit de France . He was also able to win numerous smaller races.

Brambilla started five times in the Tour de France . He was most successful in 1947 when he wore the yellow jersey for two days until the last stage . But on the last stage from Caen to Paris , the French Jean Robic and Edouard Fachleitner managed to steal the tour victory from him. Brambilla finished third, but won the mountain classification . He is one of three drivers (alongside Herman Van Springel (1968) and Laurent Fignon (1989)) who gave up the overall standings on the last day of the tour.

Pierre Brambilla - nickname La Brambille - was a nephew of the cyclist Cesare Brambilla , who won the Lombardy Tour in 1906 .
