DP World ( Arabic موانئ دبي العالمية) is one of the world's largest port operators and has a total of 78 terminals in various countries (as of 2017). Around 80 percent of the business is in the container ports sector with a turnover of more than 70.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in 2017 (2016: a good 64 million TEU).
The main owner of the company, which is listed on both the Dubai Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange (LSE), is Dubai World , the state investment group of the United Arab Emirates .
history
Foundation and first years
The company was formed in 2005 from the merger of the Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) , which maintained the downtown port of Mina Rashid and the deep-sea port of Jebel Ali in Dubai , with Dubai Ports International (DPI) , which was founded in 1999 . DPI had started operating port facilities in Saudi Arabia and Djibouti and developed into one of the major international port operators, especially with the acquisition of CSX World Terminals for just under $ 1.15 billion in December 2004, through which the company built a strong Could provide a foothold in Asia. The ports acquired by CSX also include the German inland port of Germersheim am Rhein .
In the following year, in February 2006, DP Ports was able to prevail in a bidding contest against PSA International from Singapore and take over the British shipping company P&O , which was then the fourth largest port operator in the world, for 6.8 billion dollars. However, the takeover of the American ports operated by P&O caused heated discussions in American politics, so that despite the support of the then US President George W. Bush, the port facilities in New York , New Jersey , Philadelphia , Baltimore , New Orleans and Miami were finally sold to the American International Group in early 2007 .
IPO in Dubai
DP World shares have been listed on NASDAQ Dubai since November 26, 2007 . The successful IPO that offered 23% of the company brought nearly $ 5 billion into the company's coffers when oversubscribed 15 times.
Financial crisis and second IPO in London
In connection with the financial difficulties of the parent company Dubai World in 2009, the rating agency downgraded Moody's , the credit rating of DP World to junk status Ba1 down. At the end of 2010, with a debt level of $ 5.9 billion, DP World sold 75% of its Australian operations for $ 1.5 billion to investment company Citi Infrastructure Investors , a subsidiary of Citigroup . In addition to reducing debt, they want to focus more on more profitable markets. By April 2011, the company's rating had stabilized again at investment grade .
Since June 1, 2011, the company has been listed on the London Stock Exchange in addition to the Dubai Stock Exchange .
In the second quarter of 2011, the company was awarded the contract to build the new London Gateway container port in the Port of London for the equivalent of 2.3 billion US dollars, the first berth (of six) opened in November 2013 on the north bank of the Thames . Thanks to strong Asian business and further acquisitions - for example in Suriname in July 2011 - the company remained on a growth path.
Concentration on growth markets
In March 2013 DP World sold a 75% stake in two container terminals and a logistics center in Hong Kong for a total of $ 742 million. Analysts were unsure whether this development should be welcomed as a concentration on the African and South American markets or rather critically as a sale in the area of core business, in connection with the continued extreme debt of the parent company Dubai World. DP World had already parted ways with port operations in Belgium , Russia and Yemen in 2012 .
