Jijel (also: Djidjelli ; Arabic جيجل Dschidschal , DMG Ǧīǧal , tamazight ⴶⵉⴶⴻⵍ Jijel ) is a port city in the northeast of Algeria with 131,513 inhabitants (2008) and the capital of the province of the same name .

Jijel is one of the 20 largest cities in Algeria.

Jijel is a port city on the Mediterranean . The city borders the east of the small Kabylia . The Taza National Park is about 30 km away.

history

In ancient times, Jijel was a Carthaginian, later a Roman trading center under the name Igilgili . During the Great Migration it was conquered by the Vandals , in the Middle Ages it changed between Byzantines, Arabs, Genoese and in the 16th century it was used by the Ottoman Admiral ( Kaptan-ı Derya ) and Corsair Chair ed-Din .

In 1664 the French and the Knights of Malta tried to establish a base here against the Berber pirates, but were forced to retreat that same year.

In 1856 the original city was completely destroyed in an earthquake and then rebuilt.

During the Islamist guerrilla war in the 1990s, there were many attacks in Jijel. In recent years, however, the city has opened up to domestic tourists in particular, who are increasingly spending their holidays there due to the numerous beaches and who especially from nearby cities such as Bejaia (90 km), Sétif (135 km) and Constantine (150 km) come.

Economy and Infrastructure

Jijel is known for its cork production, leather processing and steel manufacture. In addition to citrus fruits and grains grown. Fishing is also very important due to its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea . Thanks to the country's third largest port and the nearby airport, there is a brisk international export of these products. Tourism has become more and more important.
