Igilgili

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Igilgili was an ancient city in western North Africa on the site of today's Jijel ( Algeria ), between the ancient cities of Saldae and Chullu . It lay on the coast on a peninsula and an adjacent plain lined with mountains.

The city was first a trading center of the Carthaginians and then belonged to the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis . From the time of Augustus it was a Roman colony ( Colonia ) and an important trading center until late antiquity. The Christian diocese of the city continues as the titular Igilgili diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

The archaeological remains date from the Carthaginian ( necropolis in the surrounding rocks) and Roman (city wall, aqueduct ) times.
