(2868) Upupa is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 30, 1972 by the Swiss astronomer Paul Wild from the Zimmerwald Observatory at the University of Bern .
The asteroid was named after the hoopoe (Latin generic name Upupa ) on November 10, 1992 . Another asteroid named after the hoopoe is (8586) Epops .
