Saldae

Saldae was an ancient coastal town in the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis (in late antiquity, Mauretania Sitifensis ). The city is located near today's Bejaia in northeast Algeria .

The city ​​founded by the Carthaginians developed into an important military and commercial base during the time of the Roman Empire under the name Saldae or Civitas Salditana . Saldae is considered to be a base for the Mauritanian fleet (Classis Mauretanica) .

The titular diocese of Saldae of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the city .
