Mundra is a census town and seat of the Taluka Mundra in the Kachchh district in the Indian state of Gujarat . The city, founded around 1640, has been an important trading center and port throughout its history. The modern port of Mundra is now the second largest port in India after container handling.

history

The city was founded in the 17th century by a prince of the princely state of Kachchh . In 1728 a fort was built in the city . Thanks to its strategic location and its access to the sea, the city quickly gained importance as a trading center. A British colonel who visited the city in 1840 mentions that the walled city was 1.5 miles in circumference and had 1,500 houses. By 1879 there was significant trade with Kathiawar , Khambhat , Surat and Bombay . The main exports were cotton, castor seeds, legumes, wool and dyed fabrics, and the main imports were metals, wood, piece goods, grain, dates and other foods.

Since the liberalization of the Indian economy in the 1990s, the city has experienced a renewed boom. In 1994 a modern port was opened. In the following years the port grew rapidly, which led to a rapid expansion of the city and population

economy

Mundra was known in the past for the salt and spice trade and today for ties and block-printed textiles. The old port is practically unusable today, and only small local fishing vessels still operate the muddy waterways today.

In 2017, the newly built port of Mundra was the 35th largest port in the world with a container throughput of 4,240 tons of TEU and dominates the local economy. The port of Mundra is the largest private port in the country. It is owned and operated by Adani Ports & SEZ Limited (a subsidiary of the Adani Group ). Parts of Mundra have special economic zone status .

The two coal-fired power plants Mundra and Tata Mundra are located near Mundra , making the region an important business location in Gujarat.

Infrastructure

In addition to the seaport, there is the private Mundra Airport , which is owned by the Adani Group. It is currently (2019) being expanded into an international airport.
