Nvidia G-Sync
G-Sync is a proprietary adaptive synchronization technology for screensdevelopedby Nvidia . It shouldavoidso-called screen tearing . In contrast to V-Sync , the synchronization is carried out on the hardware side via the components built into the screen and the graphics processor in the PC .
With G-Sync, the refresh rate of the monitor is adapted to that of the output device. This also ensures less jerking of the picture and a slightly higher response time. A graphics processor from Nvidia is required for use. The competitor from AMD is freesync and runs so far (as of August 2019) only on graphics processors from AMD.
history
G-Sync was introduced in October 2013. However, the first monitors were only available in the 2nd quarter of 2014. In addition to the monitor with built-in G-Sync module, the G-Sync module itself, which was compatible with certain monitors and could be retrofitted, was available. The sale of the modules was stopped relatively quickly, as many monitors had meanwhile permanently installed the technology. G-Sync for notebooks was introduced on May 31, 2015. The first monitors with G-Sync with HDR support were announced at CES 2017 . The first models with HDR appeared during the year. 2 years later at CES 2019, G-Sync Ultimate and Compatible were presented.
G-Sync Ultimate replaced G-Sync HDR and also offered support for BFGD (Big Format Gaming Displays), which are characterized by diagonals over 32 inches (approx. 81 cm). G-Sync Compatible requires FreeSync support for monitors and therefore does not have G-Sync hardware. Accordingly, the range of functions is limited compared to normal G-Sync.
In September 2019, LG announced that it would support G-Sync on its current 2019 OLED TVs of the C9 and E9 series. This was done via a firmware update, which was released in November 2019.
