Nvidia Shield
Nvidia Shield refers to digital entertainment devices from Nvidia . This includes three main products: Nvidia Shield TV, Nvidia Shield Tablet and Nvidia Shield Portable.
development
Nvidia released their first portable game console, the Shield Portable , in the summer of 2013 . With an initial purchase price of $ 299 (approx. € 265), the console was offered for high-end gamers. The console allowed the gamer to play PC and Android games and stream them to HDTVs. According to CEO Jen-Hsun Huang , sales were “modest”, which was probably due to the price, which was above similar gaming devices and only marginally below the Xbox .
The next device, the Nvidia Shield Tablet , appeared a year later. This tablet had several features that set it apart from other tablets. As with the portable console, the player could stream games between home devices. It hooked up to compatible TVs for a more integrated, richer experience. An important aspect was that it came onto the market together with Nvidia's cloud-based gaming service GeForce Now . The tablet served different purposes at the same time, which previously required multiple devices. Now you only needed a single device for
- Android games
- locally available PC games,
- PC games stored in the cloud,
- a mode for console gaming and
- Twitch Game Casting
The last Shield product so far is the Nvidia Shield TV set-top box . Unveiled at the Game Developers Conference 2015 in San Francisco , it was the third device with Android TV that consumers could purchase after the Google Nexus Player and the Razer Forge TV .
The Shield TV box stood out from the competition like Roku 3 and Chromecast not only in design, but also in that it was the first set-top box with Android TV that supported 4K Ultra HD HDR . Thanks to its Tegra X1 processor, it also became the most powerful device of its kind.
