The Adani Mundra power plant is a coal-fired power plant in India , which is located on the Arabian Sea near the city of Mundra in the state of Gujarat .
With an installed capacity of 4,620 MW , it is the most powerful thermal power plant in India. It serves to cover the base load . The power plant is owned by Adani Power operated and run by Adani Power.
Power plant units
The power plant consists of a total of nine units with different capacities that went into operation from 2009 to 2012. The boilers for units 1 to 4 were supplied by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), the turbines and generators for them come from Beijing Beizhong (BB). The boilers in units 5 to 9 were supplied by Harbin Boiler (HB), the turbines and generators for them come from Dongfang (DF). The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 330 | 08/04/2009 | BB | BB | B&W |
2 | 330 | 03/17/2010 | BB | BB | B&W |

To operate the four 330 MW units, 4.8 million tonnes of coal per year have to be imported, 4.2 million tonnes for the first two 660 MW units and 6 for the remaining three 660 MW units , 4 million tons of coal per year from the state of Odisha .
All 660 MW units use supercritical steam generators ( English : supercritical : see supercritical water ) to increase efficiency. The power plant was the first in the world to be certified by the UNFCCC .
Others
The imported hard coal is delivered by ship from Bunyu , Indonesia . The power plant therefore has its own pier about 5 km from the power plant. The coal port in Mundra operated by the Adani company is the largest in Asia.
A bipolar HVDC line with an operating voltage of 500 kV and a length of approx. 1000 km connects the Adani Mundra power plant with Mahendragarh in the state of Haryana . The line can transmit a maximum of 2.5 GW and was built by Siemens .
In December 2013, the power plant exceeded its designed maximum output for the first time and set a new record with 4.644 GW.
The Tata Mundra power plant is in the immediate vicinity .
