Fujairah , also known as Fujairah (English) ( Arabic الفجيرة, DMG al-Fuǧaira ), is the capital of the Emirate of Fujairah , one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates . The population is 93,616 (estimate mid-2019).

Fujairah is located in the southern of the two main parts of the emirate about 10 km north of the border with Oman and is the only one of the emirate capitals of the UAE not on the Persian Gulf , but on the Gulf of Oman .

traffic

Fujairah is connected by the E99 with Kalba in the south and with Khor Fakkan and Dibba in the north; Dubai and Sharjah can be reached via the S116 and further E102. Fujairah International Airport , which was built in 1987 and is primarily used as a cargo airport, is located on the southern outskirts of the city . The fuel , repair and cruise port of Fujairah, which saves many ships from entering the Persian Gulf, is also important for the economy .

Attractions

In the north of the city is the Fort of Fujairah, the city's greatest tourist attraction. It was built around 1500–1550 (according to other sources 1670) from mud bricks and played a role in the anti-colonial struggle of the Wahhabis . The Sheikh Zayed Mosque was opened in 2015 and has room for 28,000 worshipers.
