The 2nd Tour de France 1904 took place from 2nd to 24th July 1904 on exactly the same route as the first tour a year before .

Race course

The race became increasingly a victim of its own success and was marked by a whole series of scandals, culminating in the exclusion of the top four of the overall standings six months after the end of the tour. Even before the start, there was the first scandal when the first place winners in the Bordeaux-Paris race organized by the competition newspaper Henri Desgranges , "Le Vélo", were not allowed to start. Even during the race, individual drivers had been excluded for unauthorized use of cars or the train. In Saint-Étienne and Nîmes , assaults by supporters of local drivers on their competitors took place. Nails were regularly strewn on the street.

In terms of sport, Maurice Garin initially repeated his previous year's victory with an extremely narrow lead over last year's runner-up, Lucien Pothier . Hippolyte Aucouturier won four of the six stages.

After the tour was over, the French Velocipede Union (UVF) formed an investigative commission, which heard dozens of drivers and witnesses by December 1904 and finally the exclusion of the winner Maurice Garin and the second to fourth place (César Garin, Lucien Pothier, Hippolyte Aucouturier ), u. a. because of forbidden agreements between the cyclists, announced. The beneficiary of the decision at the green table was the only 20-year-old Henri Cornet , who is still the youngest winner in the annals of the tour. This led the organizer Henri Desgrange to write in an article in L'Auto : “The Tour de France is over and the second edition is, I fear, the last. She went on her own success based on the blind passions that she has unleashed. "He suggested that other future should organize the tour, and his newspaper to future motor sport should focus. However, when car races were banned from city to city such as Paris – Madrid because of numerous deaths, Desgrange decided to organize the Tour de France the following year.

A total of 88 drivers from five nations ( Belgium , France, Germany , Italy and Switzerland ) started, of which only 15 remained in the classification after the exclusion.
