The Col de la République (also Col du Grand Bois ) is a 1161 m high mountain pass in Mont Pilat in the Massif Central . It is the highest point of the Route nationale 82 , laid out in 1830 , which connects Saint-Étienne in a south-easterly direction with the Rhone Valley .

The nickname de la République comes from the fact that a Christian sect, which called itself the Republic of Jesus Christ , tried to found a small state here in 1794 .

Monument to Paul de Vivie on the top of the pass

At the top of the pass, a monument commemorates the cycling pioneer Paul de Vivie , who lived in Saint-Étienne and whose home route led to the Col de la République. Since 1922, the Montée chronométrée du Col de la République has been held annually in June in honor of Paul de Vivie , a popular cycling event with up to 1000 participants.

On the second stage of the 1903 Tour de France , the Col de la République was the first mountain that riders had to conquer in the history of the Tour de France . During the 1904 Tour de France , last year's winner Maurice Garin was physically attacked by cycling supporters who wanted to support local hero Antoine Fauré while climbing from Saint-Étienne to the Col de la République . The Tour de France then did not lead over the Col for 45 years. But since 1950 it has been part of the route planning again eleven times.
