The 25th Tour de France took place from June 30th to July 26th 1931 and led over 24 stages with a total of 5095 km. 81 drivers took part in the tour, 35 of whom were classified.
The route led from Paris first to the west into Brittany and then along the Atlantic coast to the Pyrenees , where the longest and most difficult mountain stage took place. After the drivers had also crossed the Alps , they went back to Paris.
Race course
After his victory on the second stage, the Austrian Max Bulla also held the overall lead for one day. He was also able to win the 12th and 17th stages. It was to be the last Austrian stage win for 74 years; Georg Totschnig only finished this series on the 14th stage of the Tour de France 2005 .
The two best sprinters in the field, the Italian Raffaele di Paco and the French Charles Pélissier , fought bitterly for the stage victories in the flat. At the end of the tour, both were successful five times, and di Paco wore the yellow jersey for three and Pélissier for one day .
On the “king's stage” to Luchon , Frenchman Antonin Magne won by over four minutes. After a rule change, a three-minute time bonus was granted to the stage winner for the 1931 Tour de France if he reached the finish line by at least three minutes. Magne thus laid the foundation for his overall victory. The best team was Belgium, which was able to provide four of the six best drivers in the overall standings.
