The 14th stage of the Tour de France 2005 was 220.5 kilometers long and led from Agde to Ax-3 Domaines , a winter sports resort above Ax-les-Thermes . The main obstacles were the 2001 meter high Port de Pailhères and the final ascent to the 1337 meter high destination.
The race got off to a flying start after seven kilometers when a group of 15 drivers managed to pull away from the field. At kilometer 20, ten drivers still belonged to this top group, including Alexandre Moos , Juan Manuel Gárate , Stefano Garzelli and Georg Totschnig . At the beginning of the ascent to Porte de Pailhères, a pass of the highest category, the maximum lead was 9:30 minutes.
Lance Armstrong was isolated at the beginning, as none of his team could keep up after the attack by Team T-Mobile. For a short time Armstrong lost contact with Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso , but was able to catch up with them again. Totschnig was able to shake off all his companions and was the first to reach the top of the pass. Stefano Garzelli followed 52 seconds behind, the group with Armstrong, Ullrich, Basso, Floyd Landis and Levi Leipheimer after 3:50 minutes.
In the long descent, a group of eleven riders formed behind Totschnig and Garzelli. But on the final ascent, this group fell apart again when Armstrong, Ullrich and Basso increased the pace. Garzelli was soon overtaken, and only Totschnig was in the lead. The Austrian finally managed to save a lead of 56 seconds across the finish line; Thus he celebrated the first Austrian stage win since 74 years ( 1931 was Max Bulla won the 2nd, 12th and 17th stage). Armstrong finished second, Basso third. Ullrich could no longer keep up with a renewed increase in speed and lost a few seconds on the last kilometer.
