The 7th stage of the Tour de France 2005 led from Lunéville first through the northern foothills of the Vosges , then via Molsheim , the northern suburbs of Strasbourg and Rastatt to Karlsruhe . With a length of 228.5 kilometers, it was the third longest stage. For the first time since 2002 , the tour stopped in Germany .
The race was shaped by the German Fabian Wegmann . This broke out after about 50 kilometers before the first mountain classification. At times he had a lead of over eight minutes. Although he was caught up again over 160 kilometers later before Ettlingen , he took over the red dotted jersey for the lead in the mountain classification. There was another mass sprint on the four-kilometer-long home straight in front of the Karlsruhe exhibition center. Robbie McEwen won this one , just ahead of Magnus Bäckstedt .
