The 10th stage of the Tour de France 2005 started as planned in Grenoble , but the actual start took place in Brignoud, 11.5 kilometers northeast . This shortened the race to 181 kilometers. The tour management thereby avoided influencing the racing events by protesting farmers. They wanted to demonstrate against the ban on hunting wolves, as they believe they repeatedly attack herds of cows and sheep.
Shortly after the start, three riders ran away, including the former world champion Laurent Brochard (the oldest participant in this year's tour). A little later, four other drivers caught up with them. After a little over an hour, the group of seven had a lead of 10:40 minutes. In the ascent to the 1967 meter high Cormet de Roselend two riders fell back and were overtaken by the field, the lead of the five remaining riders decreased steadily. Jens Voigt , the leader in the overall classification , could not keep up with the high pace of the field .
The leaders were soon overtaken and overtaken by the approaching field on the final climb up to Courchevel . The Discovery Channel team kept up the pace, and so one competitor after another fell behind. In the steepest section around twelve kilometers from the finish, Lance Armstrong took the initiative himself and increased the pace again. Alexander Vinokurow was the first of the favorites for the overall victory, who could no longer keep up the pace. Soon afterwards Jan Ullrich , Andreas Klöden and Ivan Basso also fell back.
One kilometer before the finish at 2004 meters, the leading group consisted of only four drivers. Only Alejandro Valverde was able to keep up with Armstrong's increased tempo and won his first Tour de France stage. A few seconds later Michael Rasmussen and Francisco Mancebo followed . Armstrong was able to clearly distance its strongest competitors; Ivan Basso lost 1:02 minutes, Andreas Klöden and Jan Ullrich each 2:14 minutes, Alexander Vinokurow even 5:18 minutes. Jens Voigt lost over half an hour and had to give up the yellow jersey. The biggest loser was Roberto Heras, because the captain of the Liberty Seguros Würth team lost almost ten minutes.
