The 21st stage of the Tour de France 2005 was 144.5 kilometers long and led from Corbeil-Essonnes to Paris . As usual, the first half of the stage was more like a lap of honor in which the drivers set a rather leisurely pace. At the only mountain prize, Lance Armstrong was respectfully allowed to go first. The overall classification was neutralized already 52 kilometers (when crossing the finish line for the first time) before the finish, as numerous falls had occurred due to the wet road.
It was only after the field had reached the Avenue des Champs-Élysées that the action picked up. On the eight laps of 6.5 kilometers each on the boulevard in the center of Paris , numerous drivers tried in vain to break away from the field. Everything seemed to be pointing to a mass sprint like the last eleven years. The field was very fast due to the still open battle for the green jersey. Thor Hushovd only wore this by a narrow margin on the last stage and was ultimately able to keep it. But Bradley McGee escaped a few hundred yards from the target ; only Alexander Vinokourov could cling to his rear wheel. The Kazakh stepped out of the slipstream of Australian produced and won a complete surprise, the Tour d'honneur. All sprint specialists had to admit defeat.
Vinokurow was able to reach fifth place in the overall standings with his stage win, this came about through the time credit of the stage win and the first intermediate sprint.
