The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2005 was 183 kilometers long and led from Chambord to Montargis , through the sparsely populated area south of Orléans . The start in front of Chambord Castle was delayed by a few minutes because Lance Armstrong initially refused to start in the yellow jersey out of solidarity with David Zabriskie , who had fallen the day before . The tour director then asked Armstrong to change his jersey.

After 37 kilometers, the Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha pulled away from the field. At km 93, three other drivers caught up with him; the Hungarian László Bodrogi , the Finn Kjell Carlström and the Italian Salvatore Commesso . The quartet had a maximum advantage of five minutes, but was then caught up again by the field eleven kilometers from the finish.

Tom Boonen was beaten for the first time in the mass sprint in the narrow and winding streets of Montargis . Robbie McEwen was able to break out of the slipstream and won the stage by a few centimeters.
