The 13th stage of the Tour de France 2005 led from Miramas to Montpellier and was 173.5 kilometers long. The route profile was largely flat and did not present any particular difficulties. The heat caused problems: at kilometer 80, the road had to be watered on the instructions of the race management to prevent the asphalt from melting.
After 17 kilometers, a group of five riders pulled away from the field; this group included Christopher Horner , Juan Antonio Flecha , Thomas Voeckler , Carlos Da Cruz and Ludovic Turpin . About twenty kilometers later, the group had a maximum advantage of 8:50 minutes. Around halfway through the race, the field began to make up for the deficit under the leadership of the Davitamon-Lotto team .
Four of the five outliers were caught by the field seven kilometers from the finish. Chris Horner continued the escape and was supported by Sylvain Chavanel , who had caught up with him from the field. Ultimately, the two had no chance; They were overtaken and overtaken by the approaching sprint specialists 150 meters before the finish line. Australian Robbie McEwen won the sprint for the stage win , ahead of his compatriot Stuart O'Grady . Horner was tenth.
As on the previous day, there was another prominent failure. Alejandro Valverde , stage winner in Courchevel and best participant under 25, got off his bike after 76 kilometers and gave up the race. Since the July 5 team time trial, he had complained of knee problems that had worsened over time. For this reason, the Ukrainian Yaroslav Popovych wore the white jersey the next day .
