Notre-Dame de Monts, the bridge to the Île de Noirmoutier

The 1st stage of the Tour de France 2005 took place on the Île de Noirmoutier in the Vendée department . The individual time trial led over a distance of 19 kilometers from Fromentine to Noirmoutier-en-l'Île . The route was flat, with the exception of the 35 meter high Notre-Dame des Monts bridge between the mainland and the island. Because of its proximity to the Atlantic, there was constant strong head and cross winds.

The American David Zabriskie from Team CSC was one of the first drivers to even start, so that his victorious drive was practically not broadcast on television. Zabriskie, who had previously won the time trial on the 8th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2005, drove the distance in 20 minutes and 51.84 seconds and achieved an average speed of 54.6 km / h. The Kazakh Alexander Vinokurow from the T-Mobile team was able to place himself in second place with a gap of 53 seconds and in front of his captain Jan Ullrich . The performances of the Spanish co-favorites Iban Mayo and Joseba Beloki , who lost several minutes, were disappointing .

Ivan Basso , third overall on the last tour, crossed the finish line 1:53 minutes behind in 16th place. Record winner Lance Armstrong of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team , who started last, was able to overtake Jan Ullrich, who started one minute ahead of him, three kilometers from the finish and finished second, two seconds behind Zabriskie. The German Jan Ullrich, who had crashed into the back window of the T-Mobile team vehicle the day before and suffered a slight cut (1 mm in front of the main artery), finished twelfth, 1:08 minutes behind. The best German was Jens Voigt from Team CSC in 8th place (1:04 behind) and best Swiss Fabian Cancellara from Team Fassa Bortolo in 7th place (1:02 behind).
