The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2005 was 181.5 kilometers long and led from Challans to Les Essarts . The route was largely flat and led through the Vendée department .
The four drivers László Bodrogi , David Cañada , Thomas Voeckler and Sylvain Calzati were able to pull away from the peloton after almost 15 kilometers and were able to gain a lead of 4:15 minutes. Thus Bodrogi was “virtual” leader in the overall ranking. The only mountain classification of the day was decided by Thomas Voeckler, who had worn the yellow jersey for several days on the last tour. Bodrogi fell back on the slope. The other three drivers were finally overtaken by the field eight kilometers from the finish. Walter Bénéteau from the region tried to pull away from the field, but was caught again three kilometers from the finish.
In the sprint on the home straight, Tom Boonen prevailed ahead of Thor Hushovd and Robbie McEwen . About a third of the drivers were rated at the same time as the winner, while the remaining two thirds fell a little behind. This could u. a. Ivan Basso , Andreas Klöden and Jan Ullrich get five seconds out of Lance Armstrong. László Bodrogi won two intermediate sprints and moved up to third place in the overall standings with twelve bonus seconds.
Because of a fall that occurred within the last three kilometers and hindered a large part of the field, the jury retrospectively scored all drivers with the same time. The five seconds behind u. a. by Lance Armstrong , have thus been repealed.
