The 15th stage of the Tour de France 2005 was 205.5 kilometers long and led from Lézat-sur-Lèze to Pla d'Adet above Saint-Lary-Soulan . This stage was considered the most difficult of the tour, because there were no fewer than five Pyrenees passes and the steep final ascent to overcome.

After 30 kilometers a 14-strong group of leaders formed; this included George Hincapie , Pietro Caucchioli , Michael Boogerd , Óscar Pereiro , Erik Dekker and Laurent Brochard . The field didn't seem interested in a pursuit at first, so the outliers were able to continuously increase their lead. Together they crossed the Col de Menté with the maximum advantage of 18:45 minutes. At the third mountain prize, the Col du Portillon, the group consisted of just nine riders who had a lead of 16:45 minutes.

On the Col de Peyresourde there were only six drivers left in front of the field, but the lead was still almost 16 minutes. In the ascent to the Col de Val-Louron-Azet the lead began to shrink noticeably, because Lance Armstrong had noticeably increased the pace; only Ivan Basso and (a little later) Jan Ullrich could keep up. With ten kilometers to go, the group of six still had a lead of 7:35 minutes.

Shortly after the start of the final ascent to the Pla d'Adet, Basso started an intermediate sprint; Armstrong was able to parry, while Ullrich finally lost touch. In the meantime, a group of four with Hincapie, Caucchioli, Boogerd and Pereiro had formed at the head of the race. With almost three kilometers to go, only Hincapie and Pereiro were ahead. In the last 250 meters, Hincapie increased the pace, overtook Pereiro and won by six seconds.

Basso and Armstrong followed after five minutes, while Ullrich and Michael Rasmussen lost another minute and a half to the overall first.

The peloton was still a few corners down.
